Technology & Aphasia
Technology, like smartphone apps and virtual reality, helps improve language disorder assessments and treatments by making them more real-world and increasing therapy access.
Since 2012, I have researched how technology can help people with aphasia, including one of the first clinical trials on tablet-based speech therapy, which showed significant benefits.
Over the past five years, my lab has developed methods for remote language and thinking tests, recruiting over 200 participants and securing multiple research grants.
We’ve used technology to study inner speech! We used ecological momentary assessment, which is real time data during daily life using smartphones.
We’re exploring immersive virtual reality, a technology that makes people feel like they are inside a computer-generated world by using special headsets, sounds, and movements. We believe this may help with language therapy by creating realistic practice environments.
